Former world number two among juniors Anastasia Pivovarova, in a conversation with socialbites.ca, explained why she sees 20-year-old Russian Maria Timofeeva as the main discovery of the Australian Open 2024.
“The real breakthrough for me was made by Maria Timofeeva, because she completed three qualifying rounds and also had a difficult grid at her base. In the first round she beat the very experienced Alizée Cornet (6:2, 6:4), in the second round she beat the former world top racquet Caroline Wozniacki (1:6, 6:4, 6:1). The third is the world’s 12th racket, Beatrice Haddad-Maillou (7:6, 6:3). All of these players were very tough, experienced and truly valuable opponents.
I expect Timofeeva to prove herself this season; we will still see good victories with his performance and progress in the rankings (currently he is 100th). She is smart, plays well, has an interesting personality and is very positive. It’s nice to look at him,” Pivovarova said.
Timofeeva reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, where she lost to Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk with scores of 2:6 and 1:6.
