“We are not crazy”: UEFA cancels admission of Russia U17 team

Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Secretary General Theodore Theodoridis announced the decision not to allow the Russian national under-17 team to participate in international tournaments. His words are quoted RIA News.

“We discussed the issue with the youth teams. When we realized that this was impossible and unrealizable, we immediately stopped all conversations. “We are not crazy enough to put the entire association in a dangerous situation,” Theodoridis said.

On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee allowed Russian teams consisting of players under the age of 17 to participate in international tournaments. They were supposed to continue participating in the competition in a neutral status, but in October this issue was removed from the agenda.

In the spring of 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA decided to suspend the participation of the Russian national team, as well as all Russian clubs, in all competitions controlled by these organizations. In 2023, Valery Karpin’s team did not hold a single meeting with European teams. Russians played friendly matches with Asian Football Confederation countries.
