Two-time Olympic champion in figure skating Evgeni Plushenko in an interview TASS He stated that he disagreed with the International Skating Union’s (ISU) proposal to simplify the rules by reducing the number of compulsory jumps in single skating from seven to six and introducing the possibility of repeating a jump three times.
In his opinion, such innovations will stop the development of figure skating.
“It seems to me that this will not be accepted, again the transition to six elements is complete nonsense, figure skating is first of all a sport, of course it is an art, but it must remain a sport,” Plushenko said.
In March 2022, the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions. In the 2022/23 season, they focused on domestic competitions (Russian Grand Prix stages and the national championship). Although the issue of the return of Russian athletes was on the agenda at the ISU meeting held in October 2023, it was not brought up.
