“I associate Russian football with Lev Yashin. He is the face of your football, that’s for sure. Carrera said, “When Russian football is mentioned, this goalkeeper comes to mind first.”
In 1963, Yashin became the first goalkeeper to receive the Golden Ball. He competed in the 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970 World Championships. In 1956, as a member of the USSR national team, he became the Olympic champion of the Games in Melbourne. In 1960, the national team together with Yashin became European champions, and four years later they received a silver medal.
Lev Yashin spent his entire career at Dynamo Moscow (from 1950 to 1970). In 2018, Russia issued a commemorative 100-ruble banknote featuring his image, dedicated to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
