Dmitry Svishchev, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, commenting on the letter of the Latvian Seimas to French President Emmanuel Macron with a request not to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, said: Latvian deputies will definitely do he has nothing. His words lead the way vprognoze.ru.

“It’s a small Baltic country with small problems. If they are worried about the development of the sport, let them do it in their own country. Let them train athletes, build stadiums, and encourage mass sports. They have something to work on. And it is completely unclear what their relationship is with Russia, France and the Olympic Games,” Svishchev said.

The Latvian side thinks that the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on December 8 to accept Russian athletes to the Paris Summer Olympic Games is irresponsible and should not be supported. Therefore, Latvia calls on France, which hosts the Olympics, to take appropriate measures to prevent Russian athletes from participating in the event.

It was also noted that many Latvian athletes have already expressed their readiness to refuse to participate in the Olympics if Russian athletes go to Paris.

The IOC had previously announced six quotas for Russians to compete in the Olympic Games. The organization said Russian athletes will be required to sign updated terms of participation, which include a commitment to respect the Olympic Charter, including the “peaceful mission of the Olympic movement”. Russian athletes who rank well in their own disciplines will be allowed to compete.

The Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
