Honored figure skating coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova spoke about the change of citizenship of Russian figure skaters. His words were quoted “Match TV”.
“Do skaters who changed their citizenship in the absence of Russians have a chance to win a medal at the European Championships? Yes. And they’re doing the right thing by leaving. “Sports is their life, their profession, they have to do it,” said Tarasova.
In 2023, many Russian skaters changed their sports citizenship, including Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin, Anastasia Gubanova. Now everyone represents the Georgian national team.
They will compete in the European Championship to be held in Lithuania between 10-14 January.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. For this reason, the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended athletes from both countries from competitions. The last major tournament for the Russians was the Olympic Games in Beijing in February 2022.
