The plane carrying Gambia national team players turned back in the ninth minute of the flight and made an emergency landing. This was reported by the press service of the country’s Football Federation.
The federation said the plane was supposed to take the team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, but due to technical problems, the plane returned to Banjul (the capital of Gambia).
“Initial investigations after landing revealed that there was a loss of pressure and oxygen in the cabin. However, the technical team of the company operating the flight continues its investigations into the situation. All those on board are alive and healthy. In the statement, it was said: “A quick action was taken so that the team could go to the Ivory Coast as soon as possible. “We are trying to find a solution.”
Journalist Sane Malang reported on social media X that many players fainted on the plane. According to him, the lack of oxygen was due to the small size of the plane and the fact that the crew was at full strength.
Gambia’s first match in the tournament will be played on January 15. The national team will face Senegal. The Gambia team will also compete with Guinea and Cameroon teams in Group C.
