Legendary German football player Franz Beckenbauer passed away at the age of 78. This was reported by Sky. The former Germany defender allegedly died on January 7.
Beckenbauer played for Bayern Munich from 1964 to 1977. As part of the team, he became a national champion six times, won the German Cup four times and won the European Champions Cup (currently the Champions League) three times.
Later, the defender played for New York Cosmos in the USA for three years. There he won the championship three times.
In 1980 Beckenbauer returned to Germany, where he began defending the colors of Hamburg. In the 1981/82 season the team won the national championship. He ended his career with the New York Cosmos in 1983.
Beckenbauer has more than 100 caps for the German national team. Additionally, he won bronze, silver and gold medals at the world championships. In 1972 the defender became European champion.
Beckenbauer is considered one of the best defenders of the 20th century. He was awarded the European Footballer of the Year award twice during his career.
