Legendary Brazilian coach Mario Zagallo passed away at the age of 93 ESPN.
“We express our solidarity with his family and fans at this sad time,” said Ednaldo Rodriguez, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
In 1970, Zagallo led the Brazilian national team to victory in the World Cup. In 1998, under his leadership, the Brazilians won the silver medal at the World Cup, losing to the French team in the decisive match (0:3).
Zagallo started his coaching career at Botafogo in 1966. In 1968 he led Botafogo to victory in the Brazilian Championship. He spent almost his entire managerial career in Brazil. He worked in the national teams of Kuwait (1976-1978), Saudi Arabia (1981-1984) and UAE (1989-1990). Zagallo’s last job as manager was at Flamengo, which he left in 2001. He later worked as a guard and coordinator for the Brazilian national team.
Zagallo became the first person to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach.
