Russian chess player wins the World Rapid Championship

Russian Anastasia Bodnaruk became the world champion in rapid chess. The tournament took place in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).

On December 28, Bodnaruk drew with Chinese women Zhai Mo and Lei Tingjie, as well as India’s Humpy Koneru. According to the results of 11 rounds, Bodnaruk and Lei Tingjie received 8.5 points each. In the tiebreak, the Russian chess player took the victory over the experienced Humpy Koneru.

Magnus Carlsen became the winner of the World Championship in the men’s category of the tournament. At the end of 13 rounds, the Norwegian player achieved 10 points with seven wins and six draws.

World Blitz Championship will be held in Samarkand on 29-30 December.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has decided to deprive Russian and Belarusian chess players of the right to compete in tournaments under the flag and anthem of their countries in 2022. Chess players will be able to participate in competitions under the flags of the Russian Chess Federation (RFC) / Belarusian Chess Federation (BCF) or FIDE.

The FIDE Council had previously allowed the FCR to move from the European Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation.
