Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was chosen as the best athlete in Europe in 2023. This was reported by Polish Press Agency (PAP).
The award is presented to the winner by PAP based on the results of a survey among European news agencies. It was also announced who Djokovic beat in the voting.
Djokovic, who won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals last year, collected 178 points in the voting conducted by 21 news agencies and was 28 points ahead of Formula 1 champion Dutch Max Verstappen and the world record holder in jumping. Swedish Armand Duplantis is in sixth place in the post with 92 points.
36-year-old Djokovic finished the season in first place in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings. Spanish representative Carlos Alcaraz took second place. Russian Daniil Medvedev completed the top three.
Djokovic holds the record for titles in Grand Slam tournaments (24) and the Masters series (40), as well as the record for wins in recent ATP tournaments (7).
