Oksana Domnina, wife of Roman Kostomarov, the 2006 Olympic champion in ice dancing, talked about her husband’s motivation after the amputation.
“The turning point was when we released a video before we even met anyone. He realized how many people supported him and saw so much strength in him. It inspired him somehow. Now, when he is in a depressed mood – this is normal, it is impossible to be in a good mood all the time – this universal love really supports him,” Domnina said on the “Free Skating” podcast.
At the beginning of January 2023, Roman Kostomarov was hospitalized after New Year’s performances at an open-air show. It was reported that he was in intensive care due to pneumonia and was connected to a ventilator, and his condition was considered to be extremely serious. He later received treatment in Kommunarka. Parts of his arms and legs were amputated.
At the beginning of July 2023, the skater was discharged from the hospital. On June 26, Kostomarov posted a video of himself training with prosthetic legs.
On December 17, Kostomarov took to the ice with his former partner Tatyana Navka and performed the number “Carmen” from the 2006 Olympic Games.
