Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin damaged Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson’s helmet with a shot during a National Hockey League (NHL) regular season match.
In the second period, where the capital players were in the majority, the puck hit Ersson’s mask after Ovechkin’s shot. The goalkeeper immediately signaled that the game should be stopped to put his equipment in order, but the referees continued the match. As a result, Washington was able to capitalize on this attack with a goal scored by Tom Wilson.
Angered by this, Ersson immediately took off his mask and started pointing out to the referee that the mask was damaged.
The match took place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and resulted in a 4:3 penalty shootout victory for the home team. Bobby Brink, Joel Farabee, Owen Tippett and Bobby Brink scored for the winners. The visiting team scored goals from Connor McMichael, Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome.
Ovechkin played the match without scoring a goal again. For the Russian, this match was the 11th consecutive goalless match.
