The tragedy occurred during the first round match of the Amateur Regional Cup held in the city of Santo Antonio da Platina. According to Marcos Novelli Ferreira, director of the municipality’s sports department, it rained in the region throughout the day. Six more people were injured after lightning strikes; all were taken to a local hospital with burns of varying severity.
The match between União Jairense and Unidos was abandoned early due to the incident.
