American figure skater Ilya Malinin won the short program at the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix finals in Beijing.
The 19-year-old athlete performed a clean quad Axel on the first day of the competition and received 106.9 points from the jury. In the short program, Japanese Shoma Uno took second place, 0.88 points behind Malinin. Yuma Kagiyama from Japan ranked in the top three with 103.72 points.
Among the top 6 at the end of the short program were Japan’s Kao Miura and two Frenchmen: Kevin Aimo and Adam Xiao Him Fa.
In September 2022, Malinin cleanly performed the quadruple axel in the free program for the first time in history at the US International Classic tournament in Lake Placid (New York, USA). He was included in the Guinness Book of Records for the performance of this element.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that domestic and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions. After the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Russian figure skaters will not be able to compete internationally due to suspensions.
