Former CSKA player explained the format of the Russian Cup: Europeans will laugh

CSKA Moscow’s master player Vladimir Ponomarev criticized the format of the Russian Cup “Euro-Football.Ru”.

“The team loses in the tournament and stays out. Honestly, this is just stupid. It’s an absolutely ridiculous system. Nobody plays like this. If the Europeans recognize our format, they will laugh,” said Ponomarev.

For the second season in a row, RPL Road and Regional Road are taking part in the Russian Cup. Teams relegated from the RPL Pathway also enter the Regional Pathway in the play-off stage.

The current owner of the Russian Cup is CSKA, which defeated Krasnodar in a penalty shootout in the decisive match.

In the spring of 2022, the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) decided to suspend the participation of the Russian national team and all Russian clubs in all competitions controlled by these organizations. Russian referees who previously worked in European Cup matches also stopped taking part in the matches.
