Referees and match officials have announced their refusal to work at Greek football championship matches due to safety concerns. The referees prepared a letter and sent it to the Central Referee Committee and the Hellenic Football Federation. This was reported by ESPN.
“In recent years, Greek and foreign referees have become constant targets, punching bags and scapegoats. Bullying, threats, physical and verbal attacks… These are just some of the problems that make football toxic.
As a result, referees and assistants in the Super League decided not to officiate any matches from the 14th round until the conditions became suitable for our own safety. “With this action, we are trying to protect ourselves and our families,” the text says.
It was noted that the last straw in the case of the boycott was the arson incidents at Andreas Gamaris’ house and shop in November and the threats against Tasos Papapetrou and his family after the Volos – Olympiacos (2-2) match in December.
It was learned that the referees also requested a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
