“On a football field you can tell me what you want and it won’t bother me. I’m Uruguayan for heaven’s sake. But there are certain lines you can’t cross.”
On April 8 this year, Fede Valverde punched Álex Baena in the parking lot of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium after the match between Real Madrid and Villarreal.
Just over seven months later, the Uruguayan midfielder has referred to that incident and assured that there are “red lines” that cannot be crossed.
“In April, after a match against Villarreal, everything went wrong. Everyone read the headlines. Everyone knows both sides of ‘the story’. I don’t want to expose these terrible things again.” Valverde started talking via a letter in ‘The Players Tribune’ in which he looks back on his life, both sporting and family life.
“On a football field you can tell me what you want and it doesn’t bother me. I’m Uruguayan for heaven’s sake. But there are certain boundaries you can’t cross. Not as a footballer, but as a human being,” said the former Peñarol .
And he continued: “Should I have responded? Maybe not. Maybe I should have gone home to share a burger with my son, eat some nuggets and watch cartoons. But I’m human, and sometimes you have to know how to stand up for yourself and your family.’
Finally, Valverde recalled that “it hurt him to see that the media described me as a violent man, many lies were told that were later proven to be untrue. But I can honestly say that I regret nothing , because it made me grow even more as a person and made our family closer than ever.
It must be remembered that heJustice ruled in favor of the Uruguayan player and the Competition Committee decided not to penalize the Real Madrid midfielder, who was exposed to a lengthy penalty that ultimately did not take place.
