Al-Hilal are set to release Neymar after a knee injury as they look to sign more European stars in January.

WHAT HAPPENED? The attacker suffered a serious knee injury in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay and had to undergo surgery last Thursday to treat the anterior cruciate ligament and torn meniscus. Neymar is expected to be out of action at least until the end of the season the Saudi source ArriyadiyahAl-Hilal are considering expelling him from the SPL for the current season to make room for a foreign player.
THE BIG PICTURE: The decision is in line with SPL rules, which limit non-Saudi players to eight per team. The seven foreign players, excluding Neymar, are Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Brazilian couple Malcolm and Michael.
Furthermore, Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus has the ambition to strengthen the team with a foreign left back and that is why this decision has been made. However, he will be welcomed back if he returns to fitness ahead of the 2024/25 season.
