Luis Díaz sent a message to his kidnapped father after scoring Liverpool’s equalizer against Luton Town.
Luis Diaz came on as a substitute and scored a last-minute equalizer as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Luton in the Premier League on Sunday. The Colombian star returned to action for the Reds for the first time since his parents, Luis Manuel Díaz and Cilenis Marulanda, were kidnapped by a group called the National Liberation Army (ELN).
Diaz started on the substitutes’ bench on Sunday and was brought into the match by Jurgen Klopp in the 83rd minute, just three minutes after Tahith Chong had given Luton the lead. In the 95th minute, the winger took advantage of a brilliant header after a Harvey Elliot cross to prevent defeat for his team. After scoring the important goal, Díaz lifted his shirt with a message dedicated to his father, who has not yet been released by the kidnappers.
The 26-year-old returned to Reds training earlier this week and has been training well with the team despite the tragedy in his personal life, according to Klopp. His performance on the training ground prompted the German manager to include him in the squad for the Luton match.
Liverpool will play Toulouse in the Europa League next Thursday.
