Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikin is happy to disallow a goal from Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin in a National Hockey League (NHL) regular season game. The goalkeeper’s words were conveyed by journalist Tom Gulitti on the social network X.
“He is the best player in the world and as a goalkeeper I don’t want him to score. I opposed him very seriously. He had a lot of chances today and he couldn’t beat me. That’s good for me. I’m happy to win this battle with him,” said the Latvian.
The match took place at the Capital One Arena stadium in Washington and resulted in a 2:1 victory for the home team. Tom Wilson and Sonny Milano scored for the capital. Dmitry Voronkov scored the only goal for Columbus.
This NHL season, Ovechkin appeared in 10 games in which he scored two goals and six assists. During his entire NHL career, the Russian forward scored 824 goals. The difference with Wayne Gretzky is 70 goals.
