From 1960 to 2022, the continent’s most important trophy was held by 25 different institutions.
From the first edition in 1960 to the last final, the Copa Libertadores de América was raised by 25 different teams that achieved maximum glory. In the 2022 edition it was in the hands of the same team that had won in 2019: Flamengo defeated Paranaense 1-0 to become American champions and lift the continent’s most important club trophy for the third time.

7. INDEPENDENT (ARGENTINA)
Independiente is the team that has won the Copa Libertadores the most times. He lifted the trophy seven times: 1964, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1984.
6. BOCA JUNIORS (ARGENTINA)
In the 21st century, Boca came very close to Rojo de Avellaneda: it won it in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2007. Previously it had conquered it in 1977 and 1978. A total of 6.
5. PEÑAROL (URUGUAY)
Peñarol was the first club to win this continental treasure, which has been disputed since 1960. The Uruguayan team repeated this in 1961, 1966, 1982 and 1987.
4. RIVER PLATE (ARGENTINA)
In a memorable final played in Madrid, River were declared champions for the fourth time, with an aggregate score of 5–3 against Boca. He previously won in 1986, 1996 and 2015.
4. STUDENTS (ARGENTINA)
Juan Sebastián Verón returned to Estudiantes so that the La Plata institution could lift its fourth Copa Libertadores in 2009, repeating the same emotion as in 1968, 1969 and 1970.
3. SANTOS (BRAZIL)
With Pelé, Santos had an advantage: he won the cup in 1962 and 1963. He had to wait until 2011 to get his hands on it again and won it with Neymar as the star.
3. FLAMENGO (BRAZIL)
Flamengo won its third cup against Paranaense in 2022, but before that it also did so against River in a blood-curdling final against River in 2019. In 1981 it also celebrated with Zico, its greatest idol.
3. OLYMPIA (PARAGUAY)
Olimpia de Paraguay was crowned three times, becoming one of the biggest teams on the continent: 1979, 1990 and 2002.
3. NATIONAL (URUGUAY)
Nacional, the other main club in Uruguay, also has three trophies: 1971, 1980 and 1988.
3. SAO PAULO (BRAZIL)
In the 1992 final, Sao Paulo banned Newell’s from becoming champions for the first time. The Brazilian team repeated it in 1993 and 2005.
3. PALMEIRAS (BRAZIL)
Amid the hegemony of Brazilian teams in the late 20th century, Palmeiras was also there to celebrate in 1999. More than twenty years later, they won their second title in the 2020 edition and consecutively won the 2021 Libertadores against Flamengo.
3. GUILD (BRAZIL)
Gremio de Porto Alegre, another Brazilian giant, managed to climb to the top in 1983, 1995 and 2017.
2. ATLÉTICO NACIONAL (COLOMBIA)
Atlético Nacional established itself brilliantly in 2016 and won its second Libertadores. The previous one was from 1989.
2. CRUZEIRO (BRAZIL)
Cruzeiro ruined River’s party in the 1976 final. He also won in 1997.

Internacional, from Brazil, found glory in the 21st century. And apparently he was looking forward to it: he won it in 2006 and 2010.
1. RACING (ARGENTINA)
José’s unforgettable team. Racing has only one cup, the one from 1967. Before the inauguration, three finals had to be played against Nacional (Uruguay).
1. VASCO DA GAMA (BRAZIL)
In 1998, Vasco da Gama would eliminate River in the semi-finals and eventually become champions after beating Barcelona de Guayaquil in the final.
1. ARGENTINIOS JUNIORS (ARGENTINA)
Argentinos Juniors, the hotbed of the world, won its prize in 1985.
1. COLO COLO (CHILE)
And in 1991, Colo Colo was the first (and only) Chilean team.
1. VÉLEZ SÁRSFIELD (ARGENTINA)
With Carlos Bianchi as driver, Vélez would win everything in the 90s. Even of course the Copa Libertadores which they won after beating San Pablo in the 1994 final.
1. UNIVERSITY LEAGUE OF QUITO (ECUADOR)
Quito’s University League would reach the sky in 2008. When no one expected it, the team led by Edgardo Bauza climbed and climbed until it became champions.
1. ONCE CALDAS (COLOMBIA)
Once upon a time, Caldas would surprise the world after beating Boca, the big favorite and current champion at the time, in the 2004 final.
1. CORINTHIANS (BRAZIL)
Corinthians would also upset Boca in a final. It was in 2012.
1. ATHLETICO MINEIRO (BRAZIL)
And in 2013, another Brazilian team would reach the top, as happened for four consecutive years. This time it was Atlético Mineiro’s turn.
1. SAN LORENZO (ARGENTINA)
In 2014, San Lorenzo shook off a backpack that seemed eternal and fulfilled his big dream by beating Nacional of Paraguay.
