Monza and Argentina national team midfielder Alejandro Gomez spoke about his two-year disqualification on his social media page.
“I have never trusted prohibited practices. The possible disorder is caused by the presence of terbutaline in my system, which I accidentally swallowed with a spoonful of cough syrup to relieve my son’s cough. Terbutaline is approved for professional athletes and does not enhance performance in any way, Gomez wrote.
On October 20, it was reported that Gomez took a doping test in November 2022, just days before the start of the World Cup in Qatar, which Argentina won. This doping test gave a positive result. Gomez himself stated that he took the children’s cough syrup without the permission of the club doctors. At that time, the player was defending the colors of Spanish Sevilla. Gomez and the club had reportedly been aware of the doping case for months. They received a notification from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
