Moscow Marathon judge, candidate for master of sports in cross-country skiing and Sportmaster PRO expert Viktor Savetnikov, in a conversation with socialbites.ca, denied information about the benefits of drinking beer after the race to restore water-salt balance. However, the athlete noted that a non-alcoholic drink can cope with this task.
“Large brewers act as sponsors in competitions, but in this way they promote a non-alcoholic drink – and this can well replenish the water-salt balance in the body,” said Savetnikov.
At the same time, the referee of the Moscow Marathon urged not to indulge in alcoholic beverages.
“Running and alcohol are a complicated topic. And if you look at professional athletes, you will see that they try to maintain a strict regime and do not drink alcohol during difficult training periods,” said the expert.
Savetnikov called for active drinking of water both before and during training. During a long-distance race, the body can lose several liters of water, causing the blood to become thicker and increasing the load on the heart, which has difficulty pumping blood of this consistency.
The athlete also loses salts, mostly magnesium, potassium and sodium, which can lead to muscle cramps.
Therefore, after running, it is necessary to restore all water and salt reserves lost in the body, for this it is better to drink an isotonic drink – a salty sports drink.
