As part of the Russian national team, Valieva won the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. On February 8, Games organizers canceled the awards ceremony following the team tournament after the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) temporarily suspended Valieva due to her doping test testing positive for trimetazidine during the 2022 Russian Championships. A drug banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The visiting panel of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed the athlete to participate in the individual tournament, on the condition that if Valieva wins a medal, the award ceremony will not be held. The athlete took fourth place in the individual tournament, which allowed her to take prizes alongside Russians Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova, as well as Japanese Kaori Sakomoto. New CAS hearings in the Valieva case will be held on 9 and 10 November.
Previously Averbukh named Valieva’s main rivals in the new season.
