Tata Martino says they will join Inter Miami next season, and it is not clear whether more risks will be taken with Messi.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner may have already seen his 2023 season come to an end at club level. An unfortunate injury suffered during his last trip with the Argentina national team has limited his participation in the MLS in recent weeks.
Messi has been included in Argentina’s latest squad despite his lack of play, with two more 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru fast approaching. The second of those competitions will take place until October 17.

Inter Miami return to action on October 18 against Charlotte FC before facing the same opponents three days later in their final match of the regular season. Messi would not return for the first of those matches if he remains with the national team and would be in trouble for the second. Martino has spoken about his plans for these two matches where they are no longer fighting for anything: “Yes, we have two more matches, but the work starts now for next season. “We made good selection moves and progress over the summer and we need to be very precise about how we approach next season in the coming months.”
Once Messi’s season ends, he will have a long period of inactivity until the start of the 2024 MLS season. Argentina has more qualifying matches in November, while Inter Miami is expected to schedule friendlies, but the greatest of all time will have enough time to focus on getting back to full fitness if there is no lease transfer in January.
