In an emotional announcement that has moved American fans, the veteran defender says Miguel Layun has confirmed his retirement from football at the end of Liga MX’s Apertura 2023 tournament. Layún, known for overcoming criticism on the pitch and his unattainable dedication, has decided to end an excellent career that led him to play in several national and international teams.
The announcement was made through his social media accounts and quickly spread through the official accounts of Club América, a team with which he had a second adventure full of controversies in recent years.
Visibly moved, Layún expressed his gratitude to the fans, his teammates and the coaching staff for their unconditional support throughout his career. “It has been an incredible journey. I have lived unforgettable moments and had the privilege of representing my country in international tournaments. But I think this is the right time to take a step back and start a new chapter in my to open life.’ said Layun.
Miguel Layún, 34, has had a stellar career, including national championships in both Mexico and Europe. In addition to his success at club level, he was also an integral part of the Mexican national team at the 2014 World Cups in Brazil and 2018 in Russia, representing the Tricolor 72 times. His versatility on the pitch and ability to score goals from defense made him a player loved and recognized by fans.
