Zbigniew Boniek, Vice President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), admitted that he has not changed his stance on the admission of Russian football players to international tournaments for a year and a half. His words are quoted Spor.pl.
“I haven’t changed my mind in a year and a half. Everything is simple and clear: “no” to Russia. I believe that the SVO in Ukraine must end first, and only then can we talk about the Russians returning to the game. I made this clear at the UEFA board meeting and, of course, voted against the re-establishment of the Russian U17 national teams. Unfortunately, the committee decided otherwise.
Why did such a tweet appear? I did not write there that I supported UEFA’s decision. I wanted to show that this only applies to under-17 teams,” Boniek said.
On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee allowed Russian national teams consisting of players no older than 17 years of age to participate in international tournaments. They will demonstrate without flags or anthems, and the matches will be held abroad.
Following this, England, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Northern Ireland, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine announced that they were boycotting the match to be played with the Russian national teams.
Previously CSKA player statedmay end his career before the team is allowed to participate in tournaments.
