Russian freestyle wrestler Akhmed Usmanov, competing in the weight category up to 79 kg, won the 2023 World Championships held in Belgrade.
In the final match, Usmanov defeated Vladimir Gamkrelidze from Georgia with a score of 4:1. For the Russian team, this is the first medal of such value in these competitions.
On September 18, Russian Abdulrashid Sadulayev could not reach the final in the weight class up to 97 kg. In the semi-final match, the Russian lost to Dagestan Akhmed Tazhudinov, representing Bahrain. The fight was stopped with one minute left by Tazhudinov’s score of 9:2. Sadulaev could not continue the fight due to a neck injury.
Sadulaev still has a chance to earn a bronze medal at the World Championships and an Olympic license. Even though the fight ended early, he can focus on September 19 and continue to fight for the award.
The world championship, which will be held in the capital of Serbia, where Olympic licenses are given, will end on September 24. Athletes from Russia and Belarus are allowed to participate with neutral status.
