Earlier this month, a video of Bayer Leverkusen’s training went viral. It lasted a minute and saw a disgruntled Xabi Alonso reprimand his team for failing to meet his expectations during a passing drill. It was a microcosm of how the 41-year-old has led this Bayer team.
Since taking over in October 2022, the Spaniard has been given virtually unlimited power to restructure the club. And he has done wonders with it. In the space of 12 months, Leverkusen has gone from bottom of the table to Bayern Munich’s strongest rival in the Bundesliga, with a promising Europa League run in between.
All this is thanks to a club that is transforming. Bayer are a dangerous team that will only get better under the leadership of a coach who at this rate will have a job at a much bigger club next year.
