Again in history, the South American qualifiers possess the application of technology related to arbitration: the VARwhich has been operating on the continent for more than five years, between the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sudamericana, the Recopa and the last two Copa América, qualifying tournaments and some competitions, which was initially implemented towards Qatar 2022.
WHAT DOES VAR MEAN?
Confirmation by CONMEBOL was given in February 2020 for the first double date to be played in March, but postponed to October due to the coronavirus pandemic. While the competition is underway, the referees can count on video assistance as with the other South American competitions.
HOW TO USE
- The situation is recorded by cameras. To ensure transparency, the VAR, assisted by a Reproduction Operator, has independent access to all official cameras of the television broadcast, so that in each review the images used are the same as those seen by viewers on television.
- All prospects are sent to the Video Operator Room.
- The VAR assesses the incident on the basis of this audiovisual material.
- The VAR informs the central referee of what he has seen and/or recommends an on-field evaluation.
- The arbitrator may request a review directly.
THE STEPS TO FOLLOW
- An incident occurs and the VAR checks whether there is a clear and obvious error.
- If there is a clear and obvious foul, the VAR advises the referee to review the situation.
- The referee accepts the VAR advice by signaling the TV screen and chooses to make a decision based solely on the information received from the VAR or judge the game in the judging room.

In the event that a player at fault is cautioned or sent off or there is simply no certainty about the offender, the VAR operators can inform the whistler of the correct decision.
