Sports lawyer Anna Antseliovich, head of sports practices of the Clever Consult agency, spoke about the possibility of a lifetime suspension of membership in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC). In a comment to socialbites.ca, she stressed that if such a decision were taken, the RCC could appeal it.
“Objection is possible. All decisions, especially such important ones, are subject to appeal. And even if it was not provided for in the IPC constitution, it would be prescribed by law – IPC is under the jurisdiction of Germany – one can try to go to a German general court of law and challenge the decision.
RPC had previously appealed the suspension of membership and was successful. The IPC Court of Appeal has already reversed such a decision, so there is no doubt. In all cases, an appeal procedure is provided. There is no difference between a temporary or permanent suspension of membership. There is a mechanism provided for all such decisions,” Anceliovich said.
On September 27, the IPC General Assembly will be held in Bahrain. In May, the RPC secured its reinstatement through the IPC court and in August applied for participation in the Paralympic Games to be held in Paris from 28 August to 8 September 2024. The competitions will be held in venues previously planned to be used for the Summer Olympic Games. At the same time, the head of the RPC Pavel Rozhkov said that the IPC is preparing to suspend the membership of the Russian organization for life.
