Ukrainian Minister of Sports: I believe the Russians can refuse to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games

Ukrainian Youth and Sports Minister Vadim Gutzeit expressed his hope that Russian athletes will not participate in the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris. His words convey www.tribuna.com.

“We’re doing our best to avoid them. I believe they can refuse. Because many athletes they think are strong won’t get licenses. They’ll never join teams and they’re used to being the best. But they’re not here, no flags, no symbols. Who is this? What kind of athletes are they?” said Gutzeit.

At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) appealed to international sports federations, recommending that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.

At the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee on March 28, 2023, it was recommended to allow the Russians to remain in neutral status if the athletes were not actively engaged in supporting hostilities. Some federations offer Russians to sign a declaration of neutrality in order to participate in tournaments.

In some sports, Russians continue to participate in international tournaments as neutral athletes.
