Russian grandmaster Maxim Chigaev changed his sports citizenship. This has been reported official website International Chess Federation (FIDE).

The 26-year-old chess player will represent Spain. It currently ranks 154th in the FIDE rating with a score of 2616.

In 2022, FIDE decided to deprive Russian and Belarusian chess players of the right to play in tournaments under their country’s flag and anthem. Chess players will be able to compete under the flags of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF)/Belarusian Chess Federation (BSHF) or FIDE.

The Council of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) had previously allowed FSH to move from the European Chess Association to the Asian Chess Federation.

The FIDE Council made its decision after the international federation’s constitutional commission found no irregularities in the transition. The transition process was completed by voting at the Asian Chess Federation assembly meeting.
