Kiev opposes Russia’s participation in the Olympic Games

Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed in his social networks Ukraine’s position on the admission of Russian athletes to the Olympic Games in Paris.

“Ukraine’s position has undoubtedly not changed: Russia cannot participate in the 2024 Olympics … Sport is not outside politics, sport is politics,” Podolyak wrote.

At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.

At the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee on March 28, 2023, it was recommended to allow the Russians to be in a neutral status, if the athletes are not actively engaged in supporting hostilities.

On 14 August, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal announced that 35 countries are ready to unite and boycott the Olympics if athletes from Russia and Belarus are admitted to the tournament.
