Lately, images of visiting fans destroying money in the Argentine grandstands have become commonplace.

In the noble quest to eradicate racism from South American stadiums, CONMEBOL is not only running a strong awareness campaign across all its competitions, but is also toughening penalties for clubs whose fans break the rules. However, not all discriminatory attitudes are sanctioned by the Confederacy. For this reason, they decided from Argentina to take measures themselves to combat the problem.

After multiple images of foreign fans (mainly Brazilians) tearing up or burning Argentine banknotes in the visiting stands of national stadiums, the Agency for the Prevention of Violence in Sport (APREVIDE) of the province of Buenos Aires decided to impose sanctions on Aires to those who for reasons violate the currency mocking the economic situation the country is going through.

Through an official statement, the agency under the provincial Ministry of Security reported that it has notified both AFA and CONMEBOL that the people caught destroying banknotes will be punished under Articles 10 and 14 of law 11,929, as they will be considered incitement to violence.

WHAT PENALTY DO THE FANS WHO DESTROY TICKETS GET ON THE FIELDS OF ARGENTINA?

As reported by APREVIDE, foreigners who break or burn expose themselves to double punishment: in addition to the possibility of being arrested for up to 30 days, they are also banned from attending sporting events on the territory of Buenos Aires.

According to section 10 of Act 11.929, “shall be punished with fifteen (15) to thirty (30) days of arrest and/or restraining order from six (6) to twenty (20) dates, who occasionally or systematically cause disturbances, incitement to quarrel, insult or threaten third parties, or in any way affect the normal course of a sporting event”. The 14th, meanwhile, stipulates “five (5) to twenty (20) days of arrest and/or prohibition of participation from three (3) to ten (10) dates, to the entrant, organizer, protagonist and any other person with their statements, gestures or provocations will disturb public order”.

Apart from what was announced by the provincial body, the destruction of currency also implies a criminal offense: Article 283 of law 11.179 provides that “anyone who cuts or alters legal tender shall be punished with imprisonment or imprisonment from one to five years and who introduces , sells or brings into circulation or modified currency.”
