“Farid Bakarov, born in 2016, was seriously injured during sambo exercises under the guidance of European Games bronze medalist Mehman Khalilov. Khalilov used a dangerous technique against a minor and broke a seven-year-old’s neck as his head was below his body. The underage child was immediately taken to the Sumgait City Children’s Hospital, but died there.
It was reported that Khalilov was also detained as a suspect in the case. The Sumgait city prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case under Article 126.3 of the Criminal Code (intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in the death of the victim due to negligence).
Khalilov represents Azerbaijan’s national sambo team. In 2018, he became the bronze medalist of the European Championship and the owner of the World Cup.
