Azerbaijan delegation is leaving the European Weightlifting Championship held in Yerevan due to the burning of the flag of the republic. It has been reported TASS.
“Under conditions of such hatred and lack of security in Armenia, the normal participation of Azerbaijani athletes in competitions is impossible due to the psychological pressure exerted on them. Considering all these, it was decided to return the Azerbaijani athletes to their homeland.
Yesterday, April 14, during an event in Yerevan, a spectator snatched the flag of the Azerbaijan national team, burned it, and then threw it out of the arena. The perpetrator was caught at the scene.
The European Weightlifting Championships for men and women will be held from 15 to 23 April.
Athletes from 40 countries will participate in the tournament.
Recall that at the end of March it was reported that Russian and Belarusian weightlifters were not included in the final list of participants of the European Championship. This tournament will qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris. The admission of the Russians to the 2024 Games has not yet been confirmed.
