Therapist Andrey Zvonkov explained why it was more difficult to make a hand prosthesis for figure skater Roman Kostomarov than a leg prosthesis. Words of an expert drive the portal MSK1.RU.
Zvonkov said that at least three fingers – index, middle and thumb – should work on prosthetics for the hands. While you have to respond to impulses and do what the patient wants, there is no such advanced technology in prosthetic legs.
“There is no point in equipping legs with electronics,” said the doctor. “The important thing is to have good mechanics and a strong metal.”
Zvonkov also noted that a big problem for Kostomarov could be the repair of prostheses, which need to be placed on two shins, one hand on the one hand and fingers on the other.
“Any technique, especially complex equipment, will require maintenance, repair and replacement. And their cost is significant, at least hundreds of thousands of rubles. Everything is not as rosy as it seems to some, ”the expert emphasized.
Earlier, the doctor said Kostomarov’s prosthesis will be indistinguishable from the normal hand.
