La Albiceleste celebrated in style in a packed Monumental, but their rival didn’t want to be just another guest and got up as far as they could.
The football game was little more than an excuse. The party was planned around the match, but the most important thing about the evening at the Monumental was that more than 80,000 people in the stands and millions more at home paid the well-deserved tribute to the world champion team. But once the ball started rolling, the Argentina national team tried to win and Panama made it very difficult for them.
Dibu Martínez, Top 3 of applause, was practically still a record player, with little contact with the ball apart from cutting a sporadic center. The game was played within yards of the Panama goal and with Messi the logical flag bearer of the game, but the stick said no in the first of several free kicks, although the end of the story would again be with a smile. The one who couldn’t either was Enzo Fernández, with a mid-range shot destined for a corner, deflected by Guerra.
The second half deepened the dominance without a goal, through good saves or lack of goal from the goalkeeper. But from a free kick it opened up again when Leo’s shot hit the crossbar, Paredes stopped the rebound and Almada pushed him. And the free kick was closed when the 10th scored the 800th goal of his career with a masterful shot.
The third star shines in the Argentinian firmament and the first presentation was a success, with a party to remember and a match that turned into another victory against an opponent who sold defeat dearly.
