Together with Tatyana Navka, Turin 2006 Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov is facing another surgery to amputate part of his arm. The figure skater continues to develop blood poisoning, which requires further surgical intervention.
According to the news of the Izvestia newspaper, doctors cannot yet perform a surgical intervention due to the high risk of heart failure in an athlete. The champion’s body is so weak that it cannot withstand another operation.
Recently, Kostomarov has lost a lot of weight, he cannot move independently (he can only open his eyes occasionally), and the officers have to change his body position every two hours.
Additionally, the skater is positioned on an anti-decubitus mattress to prevent soft tissue death due to circulatory disorders.
Telegram channel Mash reported that the athlete is still breathing with a tube in his throat. He is no longer given drugs that put him into a drug-induced slumber, but Kostomarov is still severely weakened.
It is worth noting that information about the need for another amputation for the skater appeared a few days ago. On March 10, Sport-Express, citing its source, said that Kostomarov has not yet been removed from the ventilator due to the fact that the processes in the body have not improved.
Also of concern is the condition of the athlete’s hand, on which traces of sepsis have reappeared.
“Sepsis is not obvious but will need to be removed. It is not yet clear how much,” he said.
Interestingly, citing a source, Match TV reported on March 13 that the athlete’s health showed positive dynamics, despite the risk of a new operation.
“There are some improvements in Kostomarov’s condition. If such dynamics continue, doctors may initiate a discussion about the gradual withdrawal of mechanical ventilation,” the source said.
Sport24 also provided information about the improvement in Kostomarov’s condition.
“Roman Kostomarov has a tendency to improve all indicators,” the source said.
But doctor Lev Averbakh, in an interview with Sport24, noted that doctors cannot give any guarantees for Kostomarov’s recovery.
“Even if he comes to his senses, opens his eyes, and continues to react to the outside world, there is no guarantee of recovery in any way. In any case, this is a disability and, possibly, repeated treatment that will not be less dangerous, ”said Averbakh.
The expert also noted that Kostomarov would be “very lucky” if he survived.
The figure skater has been in the hospital for two months. The first information about his hospitalization appeared on January 10.
Then Kostomarov was in a serious condition on the background of bilateral pneumonia and immediately fell into an artificial coma, was connected to a ventilator, and also put on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to saturate the blood with oxygen.
Due to this procedure, the vessels were damaged, cell death began, and the doctors had to amputate: it was reported that Kostomarov’s feet and fingers were removed.
After these operations, the athlete suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and two minor strokes.
