American mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Jon Jones defeated Frenchman Cyril Gan in a duel for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title.

The fight took place in the American Las Vegas as part of the UFC 285 tournament.

Jones finished the fight with a suffocating grip at the start of the opening round to win the UFC heavyweight championship belt.

The American, who previously performed in the light heavyweight category, announced that he then moved to another weight.

The victory over Gan put him 27th in his career in a loss for Jones. The French have 11 wins and two losses. The 35-year-old fighter won his first championship belt in 2011 and hasn’t suffered a single defeat since.

UFC president Dana White has previously said that if Ghana beats UFC 285, the American would become the greatest fighter in MMA history.
