There are not a few fans who can confuse one price with another; who supplies it and what they take into account when awarding it.
The ‘The Best’ is the most important individual prize awarded by the highest football organization, FIFA. In that sense, there are not a few who could confuse this award with the Ballon d’Or.
Since 1956, the specialized French magazine ‘France Football’ has been responsible for analyzing plays, assessing performances and evaluating the behavior of football players on the playing field in order to award the best European player of the year with the Ballon d’Or.
The Best 2022-2023 Awards: when will it be awarded, best player and coach candidates and past winners
In 1988, FIFA started to award the best football players with the ‘FIFA Best Player of the Year’, although the award did not gain much significance in the world of football.
Back in 2009, both awards (Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Player of the Year) were brought together to renew and innovate by involving all players in Europe regardless of race or ethnicity and launching the first FIFA Ballon d’Or on the next year, 2010.
However, FIFA and France Football separated again six years later. It was then that ‘The Best’ appeared, awarded by FIFA since 2016, with Cristiano Ronaldo winning the first two editions. The Juventus Portugal international was among three candidates to win the 2018 title, which ultimately went to Modric.
It should be noted that The Best and Ballon d’Or are awards based on different criteria when rating players.
For The Best, only the performance of the season (from August to July) is taken into account and the votes are at the discretion of the national selectors and their captains, specialist journalists (endorsed by FIFA) and 50 percent by vote of registered fans via the FIFA website.
The Ballon d’Or only takes into account the votes of 193 sports journalists and gives priority to the opinion of the specialized press. The scores go from five, three and one respectively. In addition, it is delivered for what has been done in the calendar year, including participation with the national teams and friendlies.
Another big difference between the Ballon d’Or and The Best is in the lists of candidates. In the first there are 30 football players who aspire to the award, while in the FIFA award there are 10 candidates.
