Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin said he was disappointed by world champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen’s remarks that Russian chess players should not play in international competitions.
“Instead of using his authority to unify the chess world, Carlsen made a ‘strange’ statement. I am very disappointed…” Karjakin wrote on social networks.
Carlsen has previously admitted that he tends to keep Russian athletes out of international tournaments.
“Now that things have dragged on, I’m more inclined to think that maybe Russian chess players shouldn’t play,” Carlsen told VG.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a call to international sports federations and recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to participate in any competitions.
