Colo Colo and Magallanes dispute the 2023 definition that pits the champions of the First Division against the monarch of the Copa Chile.

Colo Colo added another title to its history after beating Catholic University in the definition of the Super Cup 2022 Chilean football. Now, at the official kick-off of the 2023 season, the team led by Gustavo Quinteros is aiming for the two-time championship against Magellan at Sausalito Stadium.

It should be remembered that in the 2020 edition, the student team managed to surpass the score exactly against Cacique and added its third star in the competition, becoming the team with the most trophies after those achieved in 2016, 2019 and 2020.

While in 2021, when the National Championship was already entering its last straight, the team led by Cristian beat Paulucci nubles and he became the monarch and took his fourth title in this competition, something he failed to hold on to in the 2022 edition after losing 2-0 to Ester Roa Rebolledo, which meant the third medal for Macul’s team.

It should be noted that this definition, between the winner of the First Division and the champion of the Chile Cup, began to be disputed since 2013, an instance won by Unión Española after beating Universidad de Chile 2-0.


ALL CHAMPIONS OF THE SUPER CUP

2013: Spanish Union (directed by José Luis Sierra) defeated Universidad de Chile 2-0 at the Estadio Regional de Antofagasta. In this way, the then Primera División monarchs defeated the champions of the Copa Chile and went down in history as the first to win the Super Cup.

2014: O’Higgins was anchored in punishment. Eduardo Berizzo’s team, just five months after winning their first title, had the chance to extend their Super Cup glory against Iquique, the new monarch of the Copa Chile. Rodrigo Díaz opened the scoring at 6′ for the northerners, but the rancagüinos equalized the score through Luis Pedro Figueroa at 39′. The match ended 1-1 and everything was decided from the twelve steps (3-2).

2015: University of Chile it won the third edition by beating Universidad de Concepción 2-1 at Germán Becker Stadium in Temuco. Those of the CDA contested the trophy as the best champion of the 2014-2015 season and the ‘Campanil’ as champion of the Copa Chile 2014. The goals? Christian Suarez and Matias Rodriguez.

2016: It was their turn Catholic University. The pre-Andean team defeated Universidad de Chile 2-1 at the Ester Roa Stadium in Concepción. The ‘UC’ were generally superior and got off to a better start, which they justified with striker Nicolás Castillo opening the bill after 42 minutes. Gastón Fernándeza at 44′ scored the 1-1 parity. José Pedro Fuenzalida was the hero of the day.

2017: Colo Colo they beat Universidad Católica 4-1, at the National Stadium, in a definition they played for the first time. The “Cacique” became the first champion of the Chile Cup to retain that trophy, as in the four previous editions the winner was always the monarch of the National Championship. The goals were scored by Esteban Paredes (double), Andrés Vilches and Jaime Valdés.

2018: Colo Colo repeated the conquest after beating Santiago Wanderers 3-0 at the National Stadium. El Popular reached the final as the king of the tournament with better performances, as the caturros played the tournament for the first time in its history. The goals were the work of Oscar Opazo, Brayan Vejar and Jaime Valdes.

2019: Catholic University managed to match the 2016 performance. This time against Palestino in Viña del Mar. The Cruzados batted 5-0 Palestinian to keep the country’s third most important trophy. The crossed goals were the work of Benjamín Kuscevic (39′), César Pinares (42′), Sebastián Sáez (58′), Diego Valencia (89′) and Diego Buonanotte (90′). In this way he added his second trophy to this competition, after the one won against Universidad de Chile in 2016 and the first for his former coach Gustavo Quinteros.

2020: Catholic University turned around a 2-0 loss to go on to win by a resounding 4-2 Colo Colo at the National Stadium. Only 4 minutes were enough for the students to turn around the intersection thanks to scores from Fernando Zampedri, Marcelino Núñez and a double from Gonzalo Tapia. First title of the season for a college team that continues to assert its local strength.

2021: Catholic University they won for the third final in a row and fourth in their history by beating Ñublense 7–6 on penalties in Collao after Carrot Pérez saved José Navarrete and Diego Valencia’s decisive rocket. They doubled the Albo, their pursuer, in crowns.

2022: Colo Colo was crowned the brand new champion of the 2022 version after beating Universidad Católica 2-0 at the Ester Roa Rebolledo de Concepción. In a difficult game, after the incidents of the fans of both teams, Macul’s team opened the scoring on 62′ after a gross error by goalkeeper Sebastián Pérez that allowed Leonardo Gil to celebrate. And when the discounts had already been played, the newly arrived Carlo Villanueva laid the tombstone after a remarkable play on Gabriel Suazo’s left. In this way, the Cacique obtained its third trophy in this competition after those won in 2017 and 2018.
