“We will defend this great heritage co-created by the Holy Father John Paul II, whose name is Poland,” PiS MP Jan Mosiński wrote on Twitter. Law and Justice MPs appeared in the plenary hall with portraits of St. John Paul II.
Attacks on John Paul II
In recent weeks, some opposition voices and segments of the media have criticized St. John Paul II, a point echoed during a visit by the U.S. President to Poland. New reports and commentary have asserted that the pope was aware of cases of abuse within the Catholic Church and may have shielded clergymen who committed grave crimes.
Defenders of the Polish pope note that much of the coverage relies on materials from the communist era and on allegations against priests that security officials have rejected.
“We will protect this great legacy.”
Today the Sejm passed a resolution affirming the good name of St. John Paul II. Politicians from the United Right stood in the plenary hall bearing portraits of the pope.
We will not allow irresponsible politicians from part of the opposition in Poland to weaken the community. We will defend this great heritage, co-created by the Holy Father John Paul II, and whose name is Poland
– wrote MP Jan Mosiński on Twitter, sharing a photo with fellow party members.
PiS politicians who displayed images of Pope John Paul II were also featured on the Sejm’s official Twitter account.
The Sejm for a resolution on defending the good name of St. John Paul II
The Sejm of the Republic of Poland strongly condemns what it calls a shameful media campaign rooted largely in materials from the era of the People’s Republic of Poland. The resolution describes St. John Paul II as the most outstanding Pole in history and states that the campaign aims to discredit him. The body approved the resolution on Thursday with 271 votes in favor, 43 against, and four abstentions.
The resolution emphasizes that the pope’s words and actions reflected a deep love for the homeland and supported the Polish nation as it sought freedom and an independent state. It condemns the use of materials from the communist era, noting that even that regime’s violence apparatus would feel uneasy about such claims.
It also describes the effort to undermine John Paul II as an attempt to cast doubt on a figure whom even former communists would have avoided using as a tool.
Saint John Paul II holds a special place in Polish and European history. The resolution points to his steadfast plea for Poland’s freedom within Europe and his practical defense of national rights as a cornerstone of Polish independence. It notes that this perspective was recognized when 2020 was declared the Year of John Paul II, a designation supported by broad political agreement.
The teachings of John Paul II continue to guide social life. The resolution cites his warning that a democracy without shared values can devolve into overt or disguised totalitarianism, a message that remains strikingly relevant in today’s context.
