In a recording shared on social media, Donald Tusk delivered a concise message to his supporters. He stated that discussions were progressing smoothly and that a government could be formed. He also announced an open gathering next Monday in a location that holds symbolic significance: the Jagodno estate in Wrocław. In one local electoral commission office, votes were extended until 3 a.m. due to long lines.

We will overcome, we will settle scores, we will right human wrongs and we will reconcile.

There was a reminder of the same resolve: victory, accountability for past actions, rectification of injustices, and reconciliation. The speaker confirmed that progress had been made and that preliminary talks were favorable toward forming a government. Positive remarks were shared about the partners involved in the discussions.

– Tusk announced in the social media recording.

Yet there was also a sense of missing the audience. He spoke of many conversations and meetings over the past days and expressed a commitment to speak frankly about what happened and to answer questions. He planned to be in Wrocław, at Jagodno, on Monday at 6 p.m.

– he added.

To whom did Tusk promise reparation for wrongs?

Within the context of addressing past wrongs, one issue is identifying who would oversee and carry out these promises if his party were entrusted with government formation. Earlier this year, the leader of the alliance met with residents of Siedlce. During a Q&A, an older member described experiences related to the security services and recalled service years with the political police. The exchange highlighted concerns about legacy and accountability rather than a clean slate.

As Tusk has frequently referenced the legacy of Solidarity, questions about how accountability would be applied have persisted. He underscored that mistakes should be corrected and characterized certain postural approaches as retaliatory in his view. He noted that many individuals who had no fault should not bear collective blame, while acknowledging the complexity of past actions. The discussion raised a question about whether a veteran officer with a background in security services might have been among those considered to have erred.

Jan Orzałowski, born in 1950, is described as a security service lieutenant and party member with prior roles in various security and civil structures. He has been noted for his long service in provincial offices and for his involvement with different security departments over the years. A scholarly account by Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz mentions that Orzałowski received recognition from a prominent security figure for his service.

Election results

In the Sejm elections held on October 15, Law and Justice secured 194 seats, KO obtained 157, Trzecia Droga (Poland 2050 and PSL) collected 65, and Nowa Lewica won 26 seats. Collectively these groups held 248 seats, with Konfederacja bringing in 18.

Coalition agreement next Monday?

Recent discussions included remarks from President Andrzej Duda about the possible majority formations and potential prime minister candidates. He noted that the United Right had Morawiecki as its candidate, while KO, Third Way, and the Left might support Tusk. He also indicated that KO, Third Way, and the Left had not yet formalized a coalition or a ministerial slate.

Sources close to the opposition suggested that a coalition among the Civic Coalition, the Third Way, and the Left could be possible on Monday. A new meeting of leaders from these groups, aimed at forming a government, was anticipated in Warsaw on Thursday.
