Settlement and Scrutiny in Polish Parliament

“This could set a dangerous precedent,” remarked Piotr Semka in Salon Dziennikarski, referring to the recent votes involving members of the Presidium of the Sejm and the Senate. It is noted that Elżbieta Witek’s bid to become Deputy Speaker of the Sejm and Marek Pęk’s bid for Deputy Speaker of the Senate were rejected. Szymon Hołownia commented that a seat in the Presidium remains open for a candidate from the Law and Justice party, but the choice must be different this time.

Settlement with a promise

Antoni Trzmiel suggested that the most viable and electable candidate presented by Law and Justice for the opposition would likely be Donald Tusk.

When the right to freedom and the ability to decide are acknowledged, that duty must be fulfilled as well. If today marks day zero for many Poles, and if Hołownia and Tusk are rushing toward power, it is essential to turn the lens on their promises of a utopian shift on earth and see how those assurances hold up. Yet this does not grant those scrutinized any license to appoint their own examining body. With more than 7.6 million votes cast for PiS, one cannot simply wonder what to do with PiS members in the manner of a weekly feature in Polityka.

— asserted a TVP journalist.

Marek Formela criticized Hołownia for a speech that he viewed as overly dramatic and dismissive toward the President, calling it his first notable misstep.

There is a claim that democracy means protecting minority rights, yet on the first parliamentary vote the message was clear: “I control it,” and that pledge was not kept. A second point concerns the notion of revenge, as described by Marshal Pęk. The dialogue suggested that Tusk had identified certain individuals as unfit for office. In this climate, parliament and the coalition were seen as instrumentally advancing Tusk’s agenda; power in the Polish parliament appeared to concentrate around a single leadership voice, guiding the actions of many parliamentarians. If this is how the new democracy is playing out, it might reflect a choice worth questioning.

— commented the editor-in-chief of Gazeta Gdańska.

Antoni Trzmiel added that digital debates boiled down to Donald Tusk ultimately deciding the path forward.

It was noted that Third Way voters followed the trajectory set by Tusk, and for left-leaning groups, continuing along this course could carry political risks.

Will PiS face collapse under pressure?

Piotr Semka underscored the risk of a dangerous precedent being established. The near future would likely reveal whether PiS’s candidate for the secret services committee would face objections, or if discussions would surface about Russia-related ties, as some observers suggested. In the Confederation, Mentzen’s stance was compared to the early moments of a different political gathering. A remembered encounter from 1987 with Tusk, relayed by a colleague who spoke of an evening with promising cigars and aged whiskey, suggested that the opposition contained younger figures aiming to perform well. Mentioning Bosak and Mentzen, the speaker observed a desire to enjoy a good life—while Law and Justice maintained a different vision and purpose. The opposing camp may reveal its disagreements, but some witnesses believed those clashes would come with limited tolerance for aggressive barbs directed at the governing party. When the Confederation advocates overturning the table, they are seen as adding only a small chair that barely reaches the tabletop to push the debate forward.

— stated Piotr Semka.
