During the plenary session of the Sejm, a proposed amendment to the draft resolution to establish an investigative committee on Pegasus will be brought forward again by PiS MP Michał Wójcik. The aim is to extend the period during which the committee can monitor developments, as he stated on TVN24 on Wednesday.
Recommendations of the Sejm Legislative Commission
On the previous day, the Sejm Legislative Commission delivered a favorable verdict on several draft resolutions. These include creating an investigative committee to probe the so-called envelope elections and adopting amendments to a commission of inquiry into the visa scandal.
The commission also signaled approval for appointing a commission of inquiry to examine, among other things, the legal soundness, regularity, and objectives of operational and reconnaissance actions. In particular, the use of Pegasus software by members of the Council of Ministers, the security services, police, tax authorities, and customs authorities during the period from November 16, 2015, to November 20, 2023, was highlighted.
The committee accepted amendments proposed by the Citizens’ Coalition. The PiS proposal to extend the time frame for investigating Pegasus-related matters within the committee, however, was rejected.
Wójcik: As a journalist, wouldn’t you want to know whether he has been tapped?
Wójcik conveyed during the TVN24 appearance that the debate at Sejm plenary would include another attempt to broaden the window during which the Pegasus investigation could operate.
He noted that the extension would apply not only to the period beginning in 2015 but could also reach back to 2007, emphasizing the need for transparency.
Why shouldn’t the public be informed about events from that earlier timeframe? He argued that openness should be the default, urging journalists to scrutinize whether any tapping occurred.
In the discussion, he suggested that if such a commission were established, it would need to scrutinize, in terms of both scope and duration, the years since 2007, especially given assertions of a program with capabilities more advanced than Pegasus.
