Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to Maia Sandu’s remarks about the absence of mutual respect between Russia and Moldova. The diplomat’s message was conveyed through the ministry’s telegraph channel, presenting Russia’s stance in direct terms.
Zakharova challenged Sandu’s claim, asserting that Moscow has consistently treated Moldova and its people with respect and highlighting the long-standing ties that bind the two nations. She emphasized that the relationship has always involved a sense of reciprocity, contrary to Sandu’s assessment.
According to Zakharova, there has always been a sense of mutual regard, and she urged that Moldova has benefited from shared historical connections with Russia. She also pointed to perceived mistreatment of Moldovan leaders and citizens by political forces, suggesting that accusations of a one-sided dynamic were unfounded.
Earlier, Sandu stated that Moscow and Chisinau never fully reached mutual respect in their interactions, while she underscored Moldova’s efforts to improve relations despite recurring tensions.
Previously, Igor Dodon, a former Moldovan president and leader of the Party of Socialists, echoed Sandu’s view, noting that a majority of Moldovans favored closer ties with Russia, yet the trajectory of relations ultimately grew strained, with disagreements shaping the course of diplomacy.
